The Istanbul Edition

Gabellini Sheppard Associates was commissioned to design the Edition Hotel in Istanbul, the first project in a branded collaboration between hotelier Ian Schrager and Marriott International, representing the next generation of international boutique hotels. Understated and gracious, the Edition Istanbul balances international sophistication with the specific cultural context of a historic city that stands at the gateway between Europe and Asia. Traditional Turkish materials and techniques are reinterpreted with a modern sensibility, for an exotic, customized lifestyle experience unique to Istanbul.

Located in the city's Levent business district, the 78-key hotel draws on the energy of the urban environment to animate its ground-floor public spaces: the two-story atrium with its dynamic ceiling feature, recalling a geometric, abstracted vaulted ceiling, and restaurant and lounge areas distinguished by screened partitions. A series of experiences unfold in a layered progression from public to private—from reception to the guest rooms—with the sensory qualities of space, sound, light, and air modulated to create a narrative environment of dynamic sophistication and luxurious warmth.

The Istanbul Edition is an all-encompassing environment, where visitors' every requirement can be met in one location. The ground-floor restaurant and bar, the rooftop restaurant and unique, customizable banquet room, and the nightclub and lounge on the lower levels are designed for a fluidity of functions, for an effortless progression throughout the course of the day and evening. A drawing room and conference center on the mezzanine floor allow for more contemplative or productive pursuits. On the lower levels, the spa recalls a traditional hammam in its emphasis on relaxed luxury and impeccable service, an ethos that extends to the entire hospitality experience of Edition Istanbul.

The guest suites are designed to elevate guests' functional needs, creating a heightened backdrop that enhances pleasure in the activities of daily living. The Edition guest room is organized into three overlapping zones: bathing and dressing, sleeping, and an indoor “veranda” for leisurely work or lounging. Some rooms also feature outdoor terraces with fresh and graphic topiary display. The generous washrooms, each conceived as a “wet room” with a soaking tub and separate steam room and shower, highlight the pleasures of bathing. A translucent glass wall enclosure surrounding the bathing area creates a glowing, alluring presence within the guest rooms. The sleeping areas are defined by a rich material palette, employing exotic woods, marbles, artisanal metals, decorative accents, and subtle lighting for an immersive, sensory environment. Veiled partitions filter daylight and define the veranda areas, which feature casual banquettes and chaises longues lining the window aperture for lounging and entertainment.

Throughout the guest rooms, the modern and the traditional mix in complementary, contrasting ways; artisanal materials are blended with modern finishes to recall historical motifs. The lighting concept creates a sense of layered light veils, soft glows of ambient translucence, which create an environment of subdued charm and tactile glamour. In this way, the material and lighting palette of the rooms is developed to embellish a sense of authenticity with a soulful embrace of refined modernity.
