National Design Triennial
Cooper Hewitt Design Museum

New York, New York

In 2000 Gabellini Sheppard Associates collaborated with the Smithsonian Institute CooperHewitt National Design Museum in designing the installation for the National Design TriennialDesign Culture Now exhibitthat took place in August of that year.

Gabellini Sheppard’s indepth knowledge of exhibition design and contemporary culture allowed for a productive dialogue with the museum in the creation of the show. The program of the National Design Triennial consisted of a dictionary of ideas: fluid, physical, minimal, reclaimed, local, branded, narrative and unbelievable, reflecting the cultural and aesthetic issues in current design. These ideas are present in diverse design practices ranging from architecture and landscape design, to product design, graphic design and new media. The exhibition highlighted the symbiotic nature of the multifarious design disciplines.
