Overlooking Central Park and situated on a penthouse floor of a west side residential tower, this 9,000 squarefoot residence for a major New York fashion designer has sweeping views through ribbon windows and terraces on all sides. To maintain the graciousness of space and views, it is conceived as an open horizontal plane graphically divided by translucent glass partitions, sliding screens and builtin cabinetry. Private areas of the residence, including the kitchen, storage and dressing and service areas are wrapped around the building core, leaving an uninterrupted rectilinear area on the building’s perimeter that can be simply divided into the main living areasoffice and meeting, dining and living and main bedroom. The sliding and pivoting translucent panels dividing these spaces can be reconfigured, opening the spaces into one another for large private gatherings. The lighting concept will enable the spaces to be treated in a theatrical dimension, allowing for permeable ’misenscenes’ to be developed throughout the day and evening.
