Rosenblat Jewelry Showroom and Atelier

The Rosenblat Jewelry Showroom is located in a former carriagehouse in the historic Poseldorf section of Hamburg, Germany. The client, an established jewelry designer renowned for her design with one of a kind gems, was looking for an intimate environment to house her collection together with her showroom, design studio, office, and a small apartment. The existing structure required extensive exterior and interior renovation in order to meet the specificities of the new program.
The entire foundation of the building was underpinned and now sits on a limestone plinth that forms the ground floor and exterior court. The main showroom opens onto the exterior court through new full height sliding doors that lend a casual and confident presence to the building and flood the interior with natural light. A precisely located window high within the stairwell between the ground and first level offers glimpses of the surrounding wooded landscape, creating a balanced but asymmetrical composition on the building exterior. New plaster moldings and roof details were based on original drawings of the carriagehouse that were recovered from the city archives. The entire building renovation was carefully reviewed with the city’s landmark community.
The 4,500 squarefoot interior has been thoroughly reconfigured within the existing shell and required extensive restoration and repair. The attic floor was partially removed to allow for a doubleheight apartment on the second level that accessed a sleeping loft located within the former gable area of the unfinished attic.
