Linda Dresner Boutique
New York, New York
The Linda Dresner Boutique, designed by Jay Smith and Michael Gabellini, is located on Park Avenue in New York and opened in 1983. The adjoining space is occupied by the Jil Sander boutique and was designed by Gabellini Sheppard Associates.
Beyond the sandblasted logo, the boutique is revealed as a brightly lit double height space. A black box floats within the space, articulating a foreground minimally furnished with a single bronze table, while allowing only glimpses to the private areas of the boutique beyond. Merchandise is discreetly recessed into sidewall niches and barely visible from the storefront. In this environment, clothes are treated as works of art or craft: knitwear is exhibited on white marble shelving, and hanging items are generously spaced and suspended from single tier rods. The material surfaces, including marble floor panels, painted metal and painted gypsum board, are seamlessly white, creating a serene backdrop to the merchandise on display.
