This private residence for a member of the Saudi royal family represents one of Gabellini Sheppard Associates’ most comprehensive residential projects. An existing house structure on-site was gutted to the slabs and columns, with a third story added on top and staff quarters excavated beneath the outdoor courtyard, bringing the living space to over 18,000 sq. ft. Perforated, sliding aluminum screens, inspired by traditional Islamic design, shade the interior and impart dynamic energy to the limestone facade. Inside, the ground-floor entertaining areas are defined by freestanding “wood box” walls, sliding metal mesh screens, and translucent glass partitions, that provide flexible space while preserving the family’s privacy. Modern furnishings and ambient and theatrical lighting provide the residence with a uniquely contemporary backdrop.
