Since joining Gabellini Sheppard in 2008, Tomoko Hirose has become a defining presence in the studio’s approach to interiors—overseeing the sourcing of all materials, furnishings, and fixtures for high-end residential, luxury retail, and hospitality projects worldwide. Her deep understanding of material performance and spatial harmony has shaped a wide range of the studio’s built environments.
Tomoko has played a central role in the development of many of the studio’s most significant global hospitality commissions, including a 200+ key luxury hotel within a landmarked building in Dallas, Texas, and most recently, a premier hotel destination in East Asia. Her ability to translate conceptual vision into elevated, sensory-driven spaces makes her a critical member of the design process. Her earlier work at Gabellini Sheppard includes landmark hospitality destinations such as The Istanbul EDITION, the TETRA Hotel in Silicon Valley, the Rainbow Room atRockefeller Center, and The Knickerbocker Hotel in New York City. In the studio’s residential design portfolio, Tomoko was recently integral in the design of a 5,700 square foot home in the Luxelakes Eco-City of Chengdu, China.
Her exceptional design acumen extends seamlessly into the realm of product design. Alongside Founding Partner Michael Gabellini, Tomoko designed the studio’s award-winning Aerial Series, a visionary rug collection developed with Warp & Weft that evokes the ephemeral beauty of water and atmospheric light.
Trained in both interior design and literature, Tomoko brings a distinct narrative sensitivity to her work—understanding how environments are read, felt, and lived in. She earned her professional designation in interior design from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a degree in English Literature from Notre Dame Seishin University in Hiroshima, Japan. She is a member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and is NCIDQ certified.
