Westfield London wins ICSC's (International Council for Shopping Centers) VIVA "Best-of-the-Best" Award for "Design and Development". The winners were annouced during a special presentation on May 20th at the RECon 2012 opening ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada. The VIVA (Vision, Innovation, Value, Achievement) Best-of-the-Best Awards honor and recognise the most outstanding examples of shopping center design, development, sustainability, marketing and community service worldwide.

More news on the Public Hotel! The March/April edition of Sleeper, a UK magazine devoted to the hospitality industry, highlights hotelier Ian Schrager's vision for the Public brand and the Chicago property, and gives a nod to Gabellini Sheppard's design role on the project.

Two additional projects are now available for viewing online: the Public Hotel in Chicago, and the renovation of the interior atrium—one of New York's premier privately owned public spaces, or POPS—at 120 Park Avenue, a 1980s office tower across from Grand Central Terminal in New York.

Michael Gabellini led a design studio today with students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also spoke as part of the university's Robert B. Church III Memorial Lecture Series, delivering a presentation entitled "Architecture of the Interior: Spatial Presence and Design Memory."

The Public Hotel is now open in Chicago! Gabellini Sheppard Associates collaborated with Ian Schrager to redesign the public areas of this historic hotel (formerly the Ambassador East) and famed Pump Room restaurant, which was renowned for hosting celebrities including Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. With enhanced lighting and an upgraded material palette, the renovation burnishes the history of a legendary property, while updating the interiors for contemporary lifestyles and travelers. Today the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center is the Archtober Building of the Day. This afternoon Michael Gabellini will lead a tour of this landmark project, which blends contemporary forms with the Art Deco tradition of the 1933 building. Gabellini Sheppard's 2005 renovation of the Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center has been chosen as a Building of the Day for Archtober, a month-long October celebration of architecture in New York City, sponsored by the AIA New York Chapter. Michael Gabellini, the featured architect at this morning's press conference, announced the initiative with a brief presentation about the design innovations and public legacy of Rockefeller Center. Project architect Elina Cardet, Assoc. AIA, presented the David Yurman Townhouse to an audience of designers at an A.R.E. (Assocation of Retail Environments) Shoptalk this evening in New York. The event also recognized the Townhouse with an A.R.E. Design Award, which she accepted on Gabellini Sheppard's behalf.

Though it began accepting reservations in April, the Istanbul Edition hotel officially opened today with a star-studded gala, with several days of events to come. The David Yurman Townhouse in New York continues to earn awards. Most recently, it won the Interior Design Competition hosted by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA). Congratulations, team!

This spring, Michael Gabellini and Kimberly Sheppard will be teaching in the MFA Interior Design program at Parsons the New School For Design. Their Studio II course, entitled "Designing for the Domestic," will investigate contemporary residential concepts, within the context of the seminal Case Study House program in mid-twentieth century California.

The David Yurman Townhouse has been awarded a 2010 Best of Year award from Interior Design magazine, in the Retail: Fashion category. This marks the second consecutive year Gabellini Sheppard has taken home top prize in the category (after winning for the Vera Wang Boutique in 2009). The Townhouse was originally covered in the magazine's September issue.

The Minnesota Shopping Center Association has recognized Gabellini Sheppard's renovation of the South Avenue at Mall of America with a 2010 STARR Award, for interior renovations over 25,000 sf. Many congratulations to the project team, including architects of record DLR Group | KKE.

The accolades for the Vera Wang Boutique, Soho continue to arrive! The Chicago Athenaeum has awarded the project a 2010 American Architecture Award, marking the sixth time that Gabellini Sheppard Associates has won this prize. The project will be recognized in Madrid during the Athenaeum's annual conference in November, prior to subsequent exhibitions in Athens and Istanbul.

This six-page spread, the first major design feature on the Townhouse, highlights the American Modern inspirations for the new David Yurman worldwide concept.

Now open: the South Avenue Renovation at Mall of America, in Bloomington, Minnesota. To help the shopping center reposition its South Avenue and attract high-end luxury tenants, Gabellini Sheppard imparted a sense of spatial clarity and luminosity to the two-level retail concourse, incorporating an upgraded materials palette of ceramic and marble, refined furnishings, and dazzling crystal sculptures designed in collaboration with Swarovski.

Containing three floors of retail space set within an historic townhouse, the classically modern flagship environment is defined by ambient lighting, two- and three-story atria, a sculptural walnut and stainless-steel stair, natural materials, and artisanal metal finishes. The second shop-in-shop concept for David Yurman has opened on the first floor of Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The concept features a proscenium frame of bronze silk mirror and American walnut fixtures that invite customers into the retail area, introducing a strong architectural statement into this landmark jewelry showroom.

The Vera Wang Boutique in Soho received a 2010 Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture from the national chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Selected by a jury of nationally recognized architects, the Honor Awards are the top annual honor bestowed by the profession. This marks Gabellini Sheppard Associates' fifth Honor Award from AIA National, in addition to over a dozen similar accolades from local and regional chapters.

Checking in overseas... Westfield London, for which Gabellini Sheppard Associates designed the Village luxury retail emporium, has received wide acclaim since it opened in 2008. MAPIC, the international conference of retail real estate, named Westfield London the Best Shopping Centre of 2009; this month, the project also received the Supreme Gold Award from the British Council of Shopping Centres, the organization's highest honor.

In this month's edition of Modern Painters magazine, Michael Gabellini interviews artist Roni Horn on the occasion of her solo exhibition, "Roni Horn aka Roni Horn," at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The interview touches upon themes present in both of their work, especially those of perception, place, and material.

Gabellini Sheppard has completed a new shop-in-shop boutique for David Yurman in Bloomingdale's New York flagship, near the southwest entrance at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street. With a design inspired by mid-century American Modernism, the shop is the first location to incorporate the new Gabellini Sheppard concept for the brand; the David Yurman flagship boutique will open on Madison Avenue in Spring 2010. This year's National Design Awards exhibition, "Design USA: Contemporary Innovation," at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum will celebrate the award program's 10-year anniversary with a retrospective of past recipients. As part of the exhibition, Gabellini Sheppard, 2006 award winner for interior design, will display illumination concepts for Jil Sander.

The Village at Westfield London opens within the largest central-city shopping center in Europe. One of Gabellini Sheppard's largest completed projects to date, the Village offers an array of luxury brands within a premium retail environment, conceived as a meandering street of shops. The project has also been featured in a Metropolis story on trends in shopping center design.
